“We have decided to give ‘Hawk’ a break in that role,” Weiss said before the start of the Rockies-Giants game in San Francisco. “We’re just trying to give him a little bit of a breather for the time being.”
The 42-year-old right-hander blew two, two-run ninth-inning leads in the first week of the season, giving up seven hits and five earned runs in only 2 2/3 innings. He also struggled in spring training.
Rafael Betancourt, the Rockies’ closer in 2012 and 2013, notched the save Monday. He worked a perfect ninth inning, with two strikeouts, to secure a 2-0 Colorado victory.
The Rockies could also consider Adam Ottavino and Boone Logan for ninth-inning duty.
